Human Life and the Scriptures

The Case for Christian Involvement

Humanity of the unborn child

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."

-Psalm 139:13-16

"As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy." (John 6 months gestation, recognizing Jesus, newly conceived)

-Luke 1:44

Humanity in God's Image

"Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.' So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."

-Genesis 1:26-27

Children a blessing

"Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him."

-Psalm 127:3

Nations are defiled by bloodshed

"Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it."

-Numbers 35:33

"There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: ... hands that shed innocent blood."

-Proverbs 6:16-17

Judgment comes on individuals and on nations

"Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed ... for all these things were done by the people who lived in the land before you, and the land became defiled. And if you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you." (Child sacrifice then was to Molech; today it is to Self.)

-Leviticus 18:21, 27-28

"If anyone takes the life of a human being, he must be put to death."

-Leviticus 24:17

"If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely (literally her child (Hebrew yalad) comes out (Hebrew yatsa (as in Genesis 25:25-26) - a different Hebrew word, shakol (as in Exodus 23:26), would be used if miscarriage were meant)) but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows. But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, bruise for bruise." (notice this deals with accidental, not deliberate, injury to mother or baby)

-Exodus 21:22-25

"You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them ... I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit adultery and who shed blood; I will bring upon you the blood of vengeance of my wrath and jealous anger." ("you" is the nation collectively, not just individuals, in the passage.)

Blessings for obedience to God's laws

"Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land."

-Leviticus 25:18

see also Leviticus 26:3-13; Deuteronomy 30:15-20

Responsibility to the helpless

"Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter."

-Proverbs 24:11

"For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence; for precious is their blood in his sight." (In this context, "he" is the just ruler.)

-Psalm 72:12-14

The Christian's attitude towards the mother

"Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."
